Artist's Comments

At one am last night i used the bathroom filled with creative spirit and formerly of urine. while washing up i looked in the mirror and told myself that i was going to draw the best drawing in my life so far. i think i have done that. i took up my pen, dipped it in ink and went to work. i started with the character of myself not sure where it would lead. i was listening to Bowie's Hunky Dory which i have found increasingly more and more about superheroes and transvestites. and then the rest came out in a Fleischer-esque way. There's a lot in this pic that represents my time here so far in Portland. Most ominously, the three floating heads of death above my own (which is in outer space): the left is the possum i cleared out of my first crawlspace job, on my belly shoving it into a garbage bag with my hands and crawling out with the bag inches from my face; the second is the dead rat, a family of which we cleared out of my second crawlspace job, i felt a poking in my side and thinking it was a chunk of cement reached down and pulled out a rat carcass, dried out and torn apart, i looked at it wondering how my life got to that point; and the third is the morphing of all the faces i saw of the people dying or waiting for death at the care center i worked at as a dishwasher/lunchlady, the only place to 'break me' eliciting tears of anger and frustration, i quit the next day. everything that hasn't been a part of making art for my living has had a taint of death about it, i feel i am here to draw not to waste my life at a service job. but now everything is hunky dory and getting better all the time...

may the goddess bless your lives as she has mine.

What I love about your work, perhaps even more than I love the work itself, is the story behind each piece. You don't just mirror what you see in the world around you or on the television in front of you... your work is a reflection of what you see inside of you. Introspection - REAL introspection - takes guts, more guts that most people twice your gurth seem to possess. When looking at your art, I don't just salute you as a creator. I admire you as a human being.

True fact.

My hero is a schizophrenic super-sleuth who kills gangsters as a hobby. He rubs elbows with crimefighting Mimes and killer Nuns. His greatest foe is a voodoo pimp.

Face it, you're going to read my comic. [link]

thanks! i'm thinking that the fleischer is spawning from this neat show i went to in P-Town where they showed old old cartoons on the wall of a building and had a jazz band improvise the music to it. it was really cool to say the least.

this is the second time you've given me a compliment that has simultaneously made my week and made me near speechless with gratitude. my sincerest thanks seems pale in the light of your compliment, but i give it anyways. thank you.

There's something almost magical about this, in the way you're incorporating elements of your memories and using them as the patron saint of your drawing, giving them new meanings and a new purpose. It's like lucid dreaming, really.
